Blood pressure measures how hard the blood pushes against the walls of the arteries and moves through the body. It is normal for the blood pressure to fluctuate throughout the day. When the blood pressure stays up, that is called hypertension. Sometimes routine activities during the day can cause the blood pressure to rise: driving, smoking, family meetings, and even going to the doctor’s office.
High blood pressure damages the blood vessels, heart, brain, eyes, kidneys, and other areas of the body. It can lead to heart attack, stroke and other life treating problems. When taking someone’s blood pressure, it consists of two numbers: systolic (heart pumping) and diastolic (between heartbeats). Normal pressure readings would be 120 /80 or lower. That is read as 120 (systolic) over 80 (diastolic). You are considered to have hypertension with a reading of 140/90 or higher.
